Your insiders’ look at Disney Cruise Line’s stunning Bahamian destination

Discover Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Disney’s newest private resort retreat, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, opened in June 2024 on the southern tip of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Designed exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests, this destination blends the magic of Disney with the beauty and culture of the Bahamas.

This private port in the Bahamas offers something completely different from its sister resort, Castaway Cay. The features of Lookout Cay continue growing with each visit—new plants flourish, fresh signs appear, and additional areas open. Let me explain what makes this private resort unique.

What Makes the Features of Lookout Cay Special?

Beaches for Everyone

Lookout Cay features something for every type of traveler. Families can enjoy sun-soaked beaches with plenty of activities and shaded cabanas, while adults can escape to the serene, 18-and-over beach with private dining, relaxing cabanas, and a full-service bar. Complimentary essentials like towels, umbrellas, and chairs are always included for a stress-free day in paradise.

Fun for Kids and Families

Children will love Rush Out, Gush Out, a colorful water play area with slides, fountains, and interactive water drums. Younger guests can also explore Sebastian’s Cove, a supervised kids’ club inspired by The Little Mermaid. These spaces are designed for family fun, but also give parents the chance to relax while kids stay entertained.

A Celebration of Bahamian Culture

What makes Lookout Cay truly special is its authentic connection to the Bahamas. Local artists helped shape the island’s design with vibrant murals, sculptures, and architecture inspired by Junkanoo traditions. Guests can experience “Rush! A Junkanoo Celebration,” a lively performance that brings Bahamian music, dance, and culture to life right on the island.

Natural Beauty and Sustainability

Disney has carefully preserved much of Lookout Cay’s natural landscape, leaving large areas of the island untouched for guests to explore. Walking trails lead through cliffs, bird habitats, and native flora, offering an opportunity to enjoy the island’s natural beauty alongside its beaches. The destination was designed with sustainability in mind, making it a retreat that honors its environment.

Dining and Comforts

Throughout the island, guests can enjoy delicious Bahamian-inspired BBQ dining, refreshing smoothies, or signature cocktails. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a family feast, or a quiet drink by the ocean, the dining options are designed to match your day in the sun.

Arriving at Lookout Cay: The Port Experience

The Docking Difference

Ships dock differently here than at Castaway Cay, where ships always back in, creating predictable port versus starboard views. At Lookout Cay, ships pull in from either direction. I’ve sailed here a few times, and the docking orientation changes every time!

The Pier Walk

Disney built this half-mile pier far out into the ocean to protect precious coral reefs. The leisurely 10-15 minute walk offers gorgeous views and ocean breezes. Morning walks feel hotter, but afternoons bring refreshing winds.

Look north during your walk—you’ll likely spot Carnival or Princess ships anchored offshore for their visit to a separate private resort on the same island. Their guests must tender to shore using small boats, while Disney guests walk straight from ship to island on a protected pier. During thunderstorms, Disney cruisers walk safely down the pier while other cruise lines suspend tendering services.

Must Know Details about the Pier:

  • Morning photo op with your ship in the background
  • Guest Services arranges golf cart transportation for mobility needs
  • Strollers and wagons available (wagons for pier use only, strollers fold for trams)
  • Wheelchair-accessible golf carts added in September 2025

Free Activities vs Paid Experiences

Getting Around the Island: The Tram System

Trams transport guests from the west side (ship docking) to Goombay on the east side. You cannot walk this distance—trams are mandatory. But Disney provides plenty of them, and the fleet grows with each visit!

Goombay: The Main Entertainment Hub

Raised wooden walkways connect buildings throughout Goombay, the island’s main area. The features of Lookout Cay shine brightest here with large, comfortable bathrooms and easy navigation.

Family Beach Area

The east side family beach showcases fine pink sand that gets everywhere (seriously, it hides in bathing suit linings!). The water gleams clear and beautiful, though this is full-on ocean. No shark nets or protected coves exist here like at Castaway Cay. Lifeguards monitor boundaries closely.

Beaches run narrow, so most chairs sit “up top” on the walkways. Three ramps provide beach access for wheelchairs and mobility devices. You’ll climb stairs over dunes to reach the sand.

Beach Access Points:

  • Multiple stairways over dunes
  • Three wheelchair-accessible ramps (spread throughout the area)
  • Limited beachfront seating due to narrow beach width

Dining on Lookout Cay: True True BBQ

I absolutely love the food here! Chefs slice chicken fresh in front of you. The sides taste fantastic. The spicy chicken sandwich delivers real heat—fair warning!

During hot summer months, drink machines struggle to maintain ice. Soft-serve ice cream sometimes melts to milkshake consistency. But the food quality makes up for temperature challenges!

Dining Locations:

  • True True BBQ (two family pavilions)
  • True True Two BBQ (north location for allergies and gluten-free needs)
  • Serenity Bay dining pavilion
  • Mabrika Cove Cabanas (private dining)

All dining is included in your cruise fare. Kids Club even serves lunch!

Sebastian’s Cove Kids Club

My kids spent their entire day here on our last visit! Sebastian’s Cove features a splash area, so bring magic bands, sunscreen, water shoes, and sunglasses. Cast members serve lunch (hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and fruit).

This popular spot sits south on the island, past the second eatery.

Character Experiences

Characters appear differently here than at Castaway Cay. Cast members cannot leave the ship in costume, so characters don’t appear during morning hours. They emerge in the afternoon around parade time.

The Play Play pavilion across from Kids Club hosts character dance parties, limbo contests, and interactive games.

Character Entertainment:

  • Junkanoo Celebration parades (noon and 2pm)
  • Mickey & Minnie or Donald & Daisy lead parades
  • Local Bahamian musicians play authentic instruments
  • Dance parties at Play Play pavilion

Shopping

A small kiosk near the tram station offers basic items. The main area features two shops: a Disney merchandise store and an authentic Bahamian souvenir shop.

Snorkeling Adventures

My husband snorkels every island visit. He reports minimal sea life on the east side (family beach and Serenity Bay). However, Mabrika Cove offers abundant wildlife! The deeper, vaster ocean there contains more coral and marine life.

At Castaway Cay, he prefers the family beach with its sunken Disney treasures. Serenity Bay there disappoints snorkelers.

Mabrika Cove: The Quiet Side

This western beach appears first when your ship docks. Family Cabanas line this shore, but I don’t recommend them for first-time visitors. All the action happens on the opposite island side!

Recent guests report disappointment due to extensive beach erosion. Hurricanes and storms wash away sand, sometimes eliminating beach access entirely from cabanas. At over $1,000 per day, I can’t justify the expense. Yes, I’ve stayed in one. But I have way more fun exploring the entire island!

Important Island Information

Public Beach Access

Disney made an agreement with the Bahamian government allowing public beach access. A fence separates Disney’s area, but Bahamian citizens can purchase wristbands. Up to 100 local guests per day can enjoy the water park.

I’ve never experienced problems personally. However, one cruise group reported stolen items. This happens anywhere—Disney World, Disneyland, even Castaway Cay. Guard your belongings prudently.

WiFi Connectivity

The DCL Navigator app coverage is poor here. I provide this feedback on every visit! Expect limited connectivity to DCL Guest WiFi.

The 5K Race

As of September 12, 2025, the 5K remains inactive. Some guests received medals by mistake, but Guest Services confirmed the ship shouldn’t have distributed them yet. Hopefully, in the feature, the 5K race path will be added to Lookout Cay.

Lookout Cay vs Castaway Cay: Key Differences

These islands offer completely different personalities and experiences. Disney doesn’t want direct comparisons, but naturally, cruisers compare them anyway!

Docking & Layout Differences

Castaway Cay:

  • Ships back into port (predictable views)
  • Compact island layout
  • Shorter walk to beaches
  • Protected cove swimming
  • Morning character appearances

Lookout Cay:

  • Ships dock from either direction
  • Spread-out island requiring trams
  • Half-mile pier walk
  • Open ocean swimming
  • Afternoon-only characters

Beach & Water Differences

Castaway Cay:

  • Wider beaches with more beachfront seating
  • Protected swimming cove with shark nets
  • Excellent family beach snorkeling with Disney treasures
  • Established vegetation and shade

Lookout Cay:

  • Narrow beaches (chairs mostly on walkways)
  • Full ocean conditions
  • Better snorkeling at Mabrika Cove
  • Growing vegetation and developing landscape

Cultural Experience Differences

Castaway Cay:

  • Traditional Disney character experiences

  • Authentic Bahamian Junkanoo celebrations
  • Local musicians perform
  • Caribbean-influenced cuisine
  • Cultural partnership with the Bahamian community

Why Lookout Cay Might Be Better Than Castaway Cay

Here’s my slightly blasphemous take: I personally prefer Lookout Cay! Die-hard Disney cruisers might disagree, but hear me out.

The Cultural Authenticity

Lookout Cay delivers genuine Bahamian culture. Local musicians lead Junkanoo parades. The partnership with the Bahamian government creates authentic island experiences. Castaway feels more like “Disney does Caribbean.” Lookout feels like “Disney partners with the Bahamas.”

The Food Wins

True True BBQ beats Castaway Cay’s dining. Fresh-carved chicken, spicy options, fantastic sides—the flavors shine brighter. Even with occasional ice machine struggles, the food quality surpasses Castaway.

Better for First-Time DCL Guests

New Disney cruisers who visit both islands on their sailing choose Lookout as the winner! I’ve gathered this feedback personally. The features of Lookout Cay create memorable first impressions.

The Kids Club Experience

Sebastian’s Cove keeps my kids entertained all day. The splash area, which included lunch and engaging activities, outshines Castaway’s kids programming. My children specifically request staying at the kids’ club here.

Growth & Improvement

Each visit reveals exciting changes. More wagons appear. Paved tram roads replace dirt. New areas open. Vegetation flourishes. The island evolves constantly. Castaway Cay feels established and complete. Lookout Cay feels alive and growing.

The Protected Pier

Walking the pier beats tendering every time! Other cruise lines anchor offshore while Disney cruisers stroll safely. During storms, we walk back to our ship while competitors suspend operations.

Must-See Spots & Photo Ops at Lookout Cay

Don’t Miss:

  • Morning pier photo op with ship background
  • Junkanoo parade at noon or 2 pm
  • Rush Out, Gush Out water play area
  • Goombay Cultural Center pavilion during celebrations
  • True True BBQ for fresh-carved chicken
  • Sebastian’s Cove kids club splash area
  • Pink sand beach views
  • Sunset from the pier walk back

Final Thoughts on Features of Lookout Cay

Approach Lookout Cay with an open mind. Don’t compare it to Castaway Cay—embrace its unique personality! The features of Lookout Cay create a distinctly different island paradise experience.

Yes, the 30-minute journey from ship to beach requires commitment, WiFi struggles, and beaches run narrower. But the authentic culture, incredible food, growing amenities, and magical experiences make Lookout Cay my preferred private island destination.

New cruisers consistently rate Lookout higher than Castaway. Experienced cruisers discover fresh Disney magic here. The island continues improving with each sailing season.
