I’ve been to Disney parks more times than I can count, and I can tell you, watching families light up as PhotoPass photographers capture their joy never gets old. There’s just something special about having professional photos from your Disney trip, and that’s exactly why Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker are absolute game-changers. Together, they make sure you walk away with beautiful, high-quality memories of every magical moment.
What Are Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker?
Let’s start with the basics so you know exactly what you’re getting.
PhotoPass is a service that gives you access to Disney photographers stationed throughout the parks. There are more than 175 locations at Disney World, from the classic castle shots to your favorite character meet-and-greets. The photographers are pros at capturing those picture-perfect (and sometimes hilariously candid) moments. The best part? Having your photo taken is totally free. You only pay if you decide to download or buy the images later.
At Walt Disney World, Memory Maker, takes PhotoPass to the next level. It’s the all-inclusive digital package that gives you unlimited downloads of every PhotoPass picture taken during your visit. It also includes those fun ride photos and even Magic Shots! These are special photos where Disney adds digital surprises, like Tinker Bell flying into your hand or confetti raining down on your family. When you pair Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker, you’ve basically got your own personal photo team following you around the parks.
For Disneyland parks, its a bit different. There you can purchase PhotoPass+, which gives you access to downloading your photos for either one day of your trip or one week. Currently, if you purchase Lightning Lane MultiPass, you get free PhotoPass+ access to all your trip photos.
So to recap, Disney World and Disneyland parks all have PhotoPass photographers to take those amazing pictures. To purchase a photo package:
- Disney World has Memory Maker for your whole trip
- Disneyland offers PhotoPass+ to purchase either single days, one-week, or it comes free with Lightning Lane passes.
The Key Differences Explained
Here’s where a lot of guests get confused, so let’s clear things up. PhotoPass is the actual photography service. You’ll find Disney photographers in all iconic locations, and they’ll snap away at no charge. Your photos link to your My Disney account, where they’ll stay for 30 days. After that, poof—they disappear unless you buy Memory Maker, PhotoPass+, or purchase individual photos.
Now, buying the digital photos one by one might not sound bad at first, but they’re usually around $15–20 each. If you end up loving more than a dozen shots (and trust me, you will), purchasing for your trip or a single day quickly becomes the better deal. It gives you unlimited downloads of all the photos for the time frame of your package.
Purchasing a Photo Package for Your Disney Trip
Memory Maker at Walt Disney World typically costs around $185 if you purchase it separately before your trip through the My Disney Experience app or website. However, if you wait and buy it at the park, the cost goes up to $210, making it significantly more expensive. You also have the option to purchase Memory Maker One-Day for around $75.
A PhotoPass+ one-day at Disneyland costs around $25 if purchased through the app before your visit, or $34 and up if purchased during or after. Disney PhotoPass+ One Week is available for $78.
Annual passholders may receive special discounts on Memory Maker or PhotoPass+ or it may come as part of their pass perks. In addition, Disney World frequently bundles Memory Maker with specific vacation packages or special offers.
Here’s something crucial that many guests don’t realize: Disney’s Memory Maker or PhotoPass+ is often bundled together with Lightning Lane MultiPass purchases (*may differ between Disneyland and Disney World). If you buy individual Lightning Lane passes, you don’t automatically receive Memory Maker, though you do get access to that ride’s photo for free. When you purchase certain Park Hopper packages, sometimes Memory Maker is included.
Disney changes their terms and packages frequently, so you should always verify the specific details of anything you purchase. You may just get lucky that Magic Maker is already included (crossing my fingers for you!).

Linking Your PhotoPass Photos
When you get your picture taken by a Disney PhotoPass Photographer at locations throughout the parks, you’ll receive a Disney PhotoPass card coded with a unique ID. There is no charge for the card and you may reuse it for as many Disney PhotoPass opportunities as you want. You can preview your photos online or through the Disneyland app. Enter your Disney PhotoPass ID and you’ll be able to see all the pictures associated with it.
How to Access your Disney PhotoPass Images
The app and Disney PhotoPass website are your gateway to accessing all your photos taken by PhotoPass photographers and included rides.
Before your trip you will want to download the My Disney Experience app. Make sure it is the correct app because Disneyland and Disney World each have their own. Then log in to your MyDisney account for that resort. You will want to link any Magic Bands you’re party is going to use to your profile. You should also make sure that your reservation and tickets are linked to your account so photographers can easily link photos to your records. When a PhotoPass photographer takes your picture, they’ll ask for your name and linked phone number, or they can scan your Magic Band directly to connect everything automatically.
Once you open the My Disney Experience app on your phone, navigate to the PhotoPass section, where you’ll see all photos taken during your visit. You can easily scroll through your entire collection, including photos from previous trips, and download photos directly to your phone’s camera roll with a single tap. Sharing your favorite photos on social media is equally simple and happens with just one click.
With Memory Maker purchased, all photos download immediately at full resolution, giving you the highest quality images possible. Without Memory Maker, you get free downloads for 30 days, after which you must purchase either Memory Maker or individual photos. Individual photos remain available for purchase for one year, so you have some flexibility if you want specific images after your visit.
Capturing Photos at Attractions and Rides
Attractions offer some of the best PhotoPass opportunities throughout the parks, and I’ve collected thousands of photos from these locations over my many visits.
PhotoPass photographers work at iconic spots throughout each park, positioned at major castle views, character meet-and-greet locations, and other scenic backdrops. Some photographers create Magic Shots with special effects that include holographic elements and digital additions you can’t get any other way. Meanwhile, ride cameras automatically capture you on certain attractions like Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, and other thrill rides, displaying your photos on screens as you exit so you can link them to your account immediately.
Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many dark rides also feature cameras that capture candid moments during your experience. With Memory Maker, all ride photos attach to your account automatically, and photographers often capture bonus shots during specific attractions that you’ll only see in your collection. These exclusive shots of guests boarding or exiting particular rides appear only for Memory Maker holders, making Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker work together seamlessly to maximize your photo opportunities.

Magic Shots: Special Effects Worth Experiencing
Magic Shots are one of my absolute favorite features of Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker. These enhanced images featuring special Disney magic make your photos truly unique.
Magic Shots add digital elements to your photos, including character overlays, special effects like confetti or magical lights, and animated elements unique to each park location. Every Magic Shot is completely free when Memory Maker is purchased, and photographers at certain locations create them automatically. The app displays multiple versions of your photo so you can see your basic shot alongside several different Magic Shot variations, letting you choose which versions you want to keep.
Some Magic Shots include hidden Easter eggs that you’ll discover when you swipe through your photos, and these surprise elements make the photos even more special and fun. New Magic Shots appear regularly throughout the year, with seasonal versions matching current events, holidays, and character celebrations. I always take time to explore all the Magic Shot options because the creativity Disney photographers bring truly amazes me on every visit.
Finding Your Photos If They Don’t Appear
Sometimes photos take longer than expected to appear in your app, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can take if you can’t find them immediately.
First, wait about 15 minutes after the photo was taken, since digital uploads sometimes experience delays due to network issues. Refresh the My Disney Experience app several times, and try completely closing and reopening it to see if your photos appear. If photos still don’t show up, check your account information carefully to ensure your Magic Band information matches your app profile and your ticket information is linked correctly. Photographers need accurate information to attach photos properly, so if something is off, your photos may go to the wrong account.
Visit a PhotoPass location or Guest Services if you’re still having trouble, since PhotoPass Cast Members can search for your photos manually and even transfer them if they’re attached to the wrong account. I’ve had Cast Members recover lost photos within minutes, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. Always ask photographers to confirm your information before they shoot, repeat your name and phone number clearly, and request that they scan your Magic Band if you have one, since prevention is definitely easier than recovery.
Maximizing Your PhotoPass and Memory Maker Experience
I’ve learned several strategies over the years to get the absolute most from these services and create a beautiful photo collection.
Visit PhotoPass locations multiple times throughout your day since different lighting creates different moods and atmospheres. Morning light differs significantly from evening light, and photographers offer varied poses and compositions at different times. Finding photographers at less crowded times, such as early morning or late evening, means you’ll get more personalized attention and photographers can take extra shots trying different poses. Interact with photographers genuinely by sharing your story and explaining whether it’s a special occasion, since they respond with more creativity when they understand what makes your visit meaningful.
Request specific shots you want by asking photographers to capture particular moments or specific family members in certain poses. Most photographers truly appreciate knowing exactly what you envision and will go above and beyond to deliver. Don’t forget to take your own photos too by having someone in your group hold a phone or camera to capture candid moments throughout the day. PhotoPass captures posed moments beautifully, while your personal photos capture the real, unscripted joy that makes memories special.
Making the Most of Memory Maker for Different Budgets
Memory Maker makes sense for different types of visitors, so let me help you figure out whether it’s the right investment for your specific situation.
For multi-day visits, Memory Maker provides excellent value since you get unlimited photos across your entire trip, and ride photos alone add up quickly when visiting multiple attractions. Character photos multiply when visiting multiple parks, so multi-park visits generate enough photos to justify the Memory Maker investment easily. For single-day visits, evaluate how many photos you’ll realistically take and whether you plan to meet characters, since that helps determine if Memory Maker makes financial sense. You can even buy Memory Maker on your phone at the park if you change your mind, and the discounted in-park price makes it more affordable than purchasing beforehand.
For families, Memory Maker captures precious moments together professionally, and these memories last a lifetime while improving with age. Many families consider Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker combined worth the investment for this reason alone. For annual passholders, always check available discounts before purchasing since your discount might make Memory Maker considerably cheaper than you’d expect. Budget-conscious visitors can use free PhotoPass strategically by visiting popular locations early morning to get several photos within the free window before downloading them before the 30-day period ends.
Final Thoughts on Capturing Your Disney Memories
I’ve spent countless hours managing photos across my visits, and Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker services keep memories alive years later in ways that regular vacation photos never could.
Technology keeps improving these services each year, with Magic Shots becoming more creative and impressive while the app becomes increasingly user-friendly. PhotoPass expands to new locations constantly, giving you more opportunities to capture special moments. Don’t stress too much about achieving perfect photos since the best Disney memories capture authentic happiness, whether perfectly posed or beautifully candid. A slightly blurry moment of genuine laughter beats a perfectly composed artificial smile every time.
Plan your Memory Maker decision before arriving at the parks so you can decide on your budget and preferences without worrying about photos later. Your Disney vacation deserves to be remembered perfectly, and Disney’s PhotoPass and Memory Maker make that possible beautifully.
